USM Board of Regents to Honor Exceptional Faculty; Also to Act on Proposed Academic Programs, Tuition Rates

Adelphi, Md. (April 14, 2010) - The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents at its next meeting will confer Regents Awards to 16 faculty members. The public meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, April 16, in Room 2100 of the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Inn and Conference Center.

The awards are the highest honor presented by the Board of Regents to exemplary faculty members. Presented in four categories, the awards honor excellence in teaching; scholarship, research or creative activities; public service; and mentoring.

In other business, the regents will take action on proposed academic programs at several USM institutions.

The board also will vote on tuition and mandatory fees for all students, including a proposed 3 percent tuition increase for full-time in-state undergraduates, and self-support charges such as room, board, and parking. Tuition for full-time in-state undergraduates has remained frozen since fall 2005.

The regents also will receive reports from the councils of university system presidents, faculty, staff, and students.

After the public meeting, the board will meet in executive session.
