E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., Named Acting President of University of Maryland, Baltimore
Adelphi, Md. (Feb. 24,
2010)-William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland,
has appointed E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., as acting president of the
University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). Reece has served as vice president for
medical affairs at UMB and dean of the School of Medicine since September 2006.
His appointment as acting president is effective March 1, 2010.
The appointment of Reece follows UMB President
David A. Ramsay's announcement earlier today that he will resign from the
presidency effective March 1. Ramsay, D.M., D.Phil., has served as UMB
president for 15 years. "Under his leadership, UMB's reputation as a leading
public academic health, law, and human services university has grown
tremendously," said Kirwan. "We owe David a huge debt of gratitude for his
service to UMB and to the State of Maryland."
Reece will serve as acting president for four months. On
July 1, Jay A. Perman, M.D.,
currently dean and vice president for clinical affairs at the University of
Kentucky College of Medicine, will join UMB as president.
"I am very pleased that Dean Reece has accepted this
appointment," said Chancellor Kirwan. "I am confident that his proven
leadership ability and his commitment to UMB excellence will help to ensure a
smooth transition during the next few months."
Part of the University System of Maryland, UMB comprises
schools of medicine, law, pharmacy, social work, nursing, and dentistry as well
as a graduate school. It is also home to the University of Maryland BioPark, a
biomedical research park.
