Independent and Impartial Review

The University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) and the University System of Maryland (USM) have called for a review of allegations that UMD President Darryll Pines plagiarized portions of a paper that he co-authored.

Given that Dr. Pines is both a member of UMD’s faculty and the university’s president, the review will be conducted in accordance with both UMD and USM policies, procedures, and guidelines. Links to both policies can be found below.

To ensure that the review is impartial and independent, the two parties will use an expert consultant at an external law firm to lead the review and act as the Research Integrity Officer, as required by our policies. The consultant will determine who will serve on the review panel.

The USM and UMD will each have assigned roles and responsibilities (1) to ensure that the review remains independent and impartial, and (2) to identify and eliminate existing and potential conflicts of interest with respect to this matter.

In keeping with federal regulations, as well as USM guidelines and UMD policies, the review is confidential, and no information regarding findings will be provided until its conclusion.
