USM Board of Regents to Hold Special Meeting October 23
Baltimore, Md. (Oct. 20, 2018) -- The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, October 23. The purpose of the meeting is for the board to discuss the results of the independent commission investigation into the culture of the football program at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP).
The briefing will occur in closed session. No media availabilities or statements are expected during or following the Tuesday meeting.
The board will discuss the investigation results and begin the process of making any decisions necessary to safeguard the well-being of student-athletes at UMCP and at public universities across Maryland.
Within one week following the October 23 special meeting, the USM expects to publicly share findings from the independent commission investigation and to announce any initial decisions and/or recommendations from the board.
At the 9 a.m. start of the meeting, the board will vote publicly on whether to reconvene in closed session. The location is the USM Baltimore headquarters building in the Columbus Center, located at 701 E. Pratt Street, Baltimore, Md. The public vote will take place in the multi-purpose room. The closed session would follow Open Meetings Act exceptions regarding pending or potential litigation, advice from legal counsel and discussion of personnel matters. The agenda and supporting materials for Board of Regents meetings are here.
The independent commission is the second investigation being overseen by the USM Board of Regents. On September 21, after receiving an initial briefing, the board subsequently released publicly the findings of an investigation conducted by Dr. Rod Walters into the procedures and protocols within the UMCP athletics department as they related to the death of UMCP student-athlete Jordan McNair.
