Three USM Board of Regents Committees to Hold Regular Meetings October 11

Baltimore, Md. (Oct. 9, 2018) – Three committees of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will hold regularly scheduled meetings on Thursday, October 11. The meetings will take place at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Inn and Conference Center (Chesapeake Ballroom Salon A), 3501 University Blvd. East, Adelphi, MD.

(The meetings do not pertain to the ongoing work of the commission investigating the culture of the football program at the University of Maryland, College Park.)

The Committee on Organization and Compensation will meet at 8:30 a.m. and hear several information items. Those include the status of the work plan on executive compensation and governance and a review of board policies by the committee. The committee will conclude the public meeting with a vote on whether to reconvene in closed session to maintain confidentiality regarding collective bargaining negotiations (§3-305(b)(9)) and to maintain confidentiality of discussion regarding individual employment agreements (§3-305(b)(1)).

The Committee on Finance will vote publicly at 10:30 a.m. on whether to reconvene in closed session. In closed session, the committee would consider a real property acquisition via lease of space in the City of Hagerstown and the investment of the USM Common Trust Fund.

The public session is scheduled to resume at 11:45 a.m. The committee will hear the Frostburg State University facilities master plan. Action items include a vote on a $25 million quasi-endowment to provide matching funds for the Maryland Promise Fund at the University of Maryland, College Park and a renovation of 16 S. Poppleton Street at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB).

The Committee on Economic Development and Technology Commercialization will meet at 12:30 p.m. and hear a presentation from a featured USM startup, NextStep Robotics. CEO Brad Hennessie will discuss the company’s new medical device, developed at UMB, which treats foot drop experienced by recovering stroke victims. The company is a recent recipient of a USM Maryland Momentum Fund investment. Representatives from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Career Center will discuss a new internship program, administered by UMBC and recently funded by the administration of Governor Hogan.
