USM Board of Regents to be Briefed on Sept. 21 Regarding Dr. Rod Walters Investigation into Questions Related to Death of University of Maryland Terrapins Football Player Jordan McNair
Briefing Will Occur at Time to Be Announced, at site of Regularly Scheduled Regents Meeting
Baltimore, Md. (Sept. 12, 2018) – At its next regularly scheduled meeting on September 21, 2018 at Towson University, the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will be briefed on the findings of the independent consultant investigating questions related to the tragic death of University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) student-athlete Jordan McNair.
Following the Board of Regents briefing, which will occur in closed session pursuant to the Open Meetings Act, findings will be shared publicly later that afternoon. Additional planning details will be made available before Sept. 21.
Following Mr. McNair’s death, the university launched an investigation led by Dr. Rod Walters, a nationally recognized sports medicine consultant. On August 17, the Board of Regents announced plans to assume leadership of the review.
The Walters review is one of two separate ongoing investigations being overseen by the Board of Regents. Separately, an eight-member commission has also been appointed to look into the culture of the UMCP football program, and its work is underway.
“The Board of Regents is committed to uncovering all the discoverable facts about Jordan McNair’s tragic death, and separately, the culture of the football program at the University of Maryland, College Park,” USM Board of Regents Chair James Brady said. “Once the board has the facts, we are committed to sharing what we find with the people of Maryland, and to making whatever decisions might be necessary and appropriate to best support our students.”
At its final regularly scheduled meeting of the just-passed 2017-18 academic year on June 22, the board set regular meeting dates for the new 2018-19 academic year. During that June meeting, the board approved Sept. 21 as the first regular meeting of the full board for the 2018-19 academic year.
